My Design Faves of 2012

Thought I’d do something a little different and post my fave design related tutorials/freebies/finds of 2012. I’d also love to hear your faves as well.

Here are a my Top Ten Faves in no particular order:

1. How to Create a Modern Ribbon Banner Navigation Bar with Pure HTML/CSS3

This is pretty cool and something that I would NOT have figured out on my own…well maybe someday I would have but I’m just glad someone else came up with this great tutorial. Thank you WebDesign Tuts +

2. Sudtipos Fonts: Love, Love, Love this site! For all things beautiful when it comes to Fonts this is the place to check out. I love that you see a sample of the font when you hover over the name of the font. The fonts are usually pricey but it’s definitely worth saving up for (speaking as a designer).

3. Bracket Frames in Illustrator Tutorial- This year I fell in love with the site called Nicole’s Classes. One my goals this year is to take a class from this site and brush up on my skills! Can’t wait! I have always wanted to learn how to create my own bracket frames in Illustrator- this is a great tutorial.

4. Fuzzimo (Freebies for Commercial and Personal Use): Who doesn’t love free? This site has such great design freebies to give your designs(blog or other wise) that added umph that it needs!

5. Button Generator at http://www.mycoolrealm.com/sandbox/gbgen/. This makes it sooooooo easy to make your own blog button. I love this and many of my blog friends love and use this too!

6. MyGrafico.com has fun, cute and stylish digital art that is afforadable.

7. Depositphotos.com is a great place to get commercial use images/illustrations/clip art for you blog. It’s a little more affordable than istockphoto in my opinon.

8. Fab n’ Free Has quality freebies for you to use on your blog or to print out.

9. Design Seeds has a great selection of color schemes to help get your creativity going. The great thing is you can pin these to pinterest and save them for future use!

10. Awesome Social Media Icons: Sweet Simplicity Design Shoppe ( I couldn’t resist!) These have been really popular! P.S these will be going on sale in the New Year!

The first one is a Blogger design I made for Elise at “I Heart Pears“- She has an awesome blog where she gives awesome designs tips for creating your perfect nursery. I created a custom drop down menu for her and created a custom “About Me” section as well custom social media icons.

The next design was created for Deanna at Spotlight 316. Deanna blogs on wordpress so I used the Pretty Young Thing Theme from Studiopress to customize her site. Deanna was great to work with and made the design process go quick and smooth. I love her encouraging posts and heart for people that comes across. Her blog Mission Statement: In a casual and conversational manner, spotLIGHT316 is a site dedicated to lifting up and encouraging others to be extraordinary in the ordinary of life.

Design & Life Update

Hey all, I’m back to update you on my design business and life in general.

First off I just want to say that I originally took time off from designing so I could dedicate more time to my boys as well as catch up the last few designs I had committed to. I’m glad to report that my boys are doing so great and are progressing so much since late August. We’re starting to see them grow in their language development, which for them is basic like saying and repeating word/sounds that we say to them.

They weren’t doing this before August so that is what I call a praise report ( that’s christianese for “good news”).

We also found out in early August that we were pregnant and unfortunately that pregnancy ended in a miscarriage very recently. I’m grateful that during this difficult time I’ve been able to focus on family and not be consumed with designs. I appreciate everyone’s prayers as well as they have been a backbone of strength for us all.

So I’ve been trying to regain my focus and see what I need to do regarding this business and I decided that I am going to slowly start back up with designing. Basically I’m going to only choose projects that fit my schedule and that will allow me to spend more time being a mom and not a frustrated overly booked designer. I’m sure you all understand where I’m coming from.

So I am only taking on one design per month right now beginning with the month of November and possibly by January 2012 I will take on 2 designs per month.

Taking A Little Break!

Hey Wonderful People! Just want to let you know that I’m taking a mini-break from designing this Fall. I am still planning on finishing up the design projects that I have on my calendar through October (so if you’ve put down a deposit or paid in full for a design don’t worry!) but I”m not taking on anymore until January or February 2013.

The reason I am doing this is to be able to have some more time to devote to my two beautiful 3 year old boys Dylan & Caden. They’re the beautiful blue-eyed boys you see in the pic above! My boys have been having some setbacks in their development and I truly feel called to use my time in helping them through this, seeking God in prayer for breakthrough with these struggles that my boys are going through, and just being available for my family’s needs right now.

As I write this I know in my heart that I am doing the right thing for my little family. It doesn’t’ really make sense financially for me to cut back on designing but I am trusting God to provide for our every need as I make this small sacrifice for my family. Thank you all so much for your prayers, encouraging words and for just being there!

I will still try to be around and provide some helpful online tutorials, interesting blog posts and a few freebies here on this site. I’ll make sure to post a link to them on facebook and twitter too!

If you have any questions or if you would even like to part of a group of people who are praying for my boys on a regular basis please let me know here or through email so I can update you on the specific needs we’re believing God for.

Blog Button Code Generator

When I first began to learn the ins and outs of blog design I had so much fun when I would find cool ways to spruce up my personal blog.

For me it’s was super satisfying to learn how to do things myself…I guess that’s why I ended up starting this business.

For all you DIY’ers here is a great site where you can create a blog button grab box code. It’s super easy to use. You just need to have your button image uploaded to a place like Photobucket.com.

When you create your blog button make sure not to make too big. The standard sizes are 125×125 pixels and 150 x150 pixels. You can create the image for your blog button on Pixlr.com or any photo editing program. I personally use Photoshop.

1.Once you have your image created make sure to upload it to Photobucket.com

2. Copy and paste the “direct link” of your image from Photobucket.
